Tuesday Track List: Female Songstresses

photos: getty images

This week, I have been very so into the deep, aching, soul voice of some of my favorite female singers-both past and present. So I decided to put together a list of the best (in my opinion) songs to fill that female soul fix. It's got all of those classic sirens: Aretha, Etta, Billie, Nina, and Whitney. It also has those women who are the new classic-Adele, Duffy, and the late and great Amy. So enjoy, and don't be afraid to put your favorite soul-sister songs at the bottom.

Style Icon: Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was rock 'n' roll. Her smooth, husky growl made the world fall in love with her. She sang hard and partied harder, and her style reflected it. She lived in Bohemia staple pieces, dawning stacked beaded necklaces, flowing silk blouses, the occasional feather boa, and the oh-so-messy hair. She left us way too soon, taking a little piece of our hearts along with her.

Music Monday - Highasakite

Allow me to introduce you to Norwegian five-piece Highasakite. The band has a dream-pop vibe mixed with flavors of 60s folk, light synths, and shimmery pop. Their sound oozes with classic Norwegian folk influences. Led by the rich and dreamy vocals of Ingrid Helene HÃ¥vik, the band mixes moody and emotional lyrical stories with a soothing yet bright folk-y sound. They released their debut album, All That Floats Will Rain, in 2012. In 2013, they released their second LP, In and Out of Weeks. Their latest album, Silent Treatment, is available now.

Debby Ryan Went Platinum. And We Can't Get Enough!

credit: Kristin Ess
Disney sweetheart Debby Ryan has busted her "good girl" shell this weekend by going totally platinum. The color is a huge departure from her usual hue, an auburn sometimes coppery mix. She took the plunge while on break from filming her hit show Jessie with a little help colorist to the stars Kristin Ess. The new look is all in preparation for the release of her debut album with her band, Debby and the Never Ending. The album is set to drop June 24th featuring their latest single, "When The Dark Falls." New music. New look. New Debby.

Style Icon: Brigitte Bardot

Brigitte Bardot is a true style icon. She was that perfect mix of quirk, bombshell, and class. She made every women in the 50s and 60s long to be French. She lounged on the beaches of St. Tropez in her signature ittsy-bitsy bikini, with the wind blowing through her coveted golden locks. Women to this day long for "The Bardot" look. Blonde bombshell #1. Legend till the end.

Music Monday - Sam Smith

Sam Smith. Do you see that name? Remember it. Lock that pup down in your brain bank because this guy will be legend. Chances are you've heard Smith's insane range flood the air waves on the infectious track "La La La" with fellow Brit-hit Naughty Boy. But believe me, there is so much more. If you haven't heard of Sam think of him as Adele's musical twin spirit brother! He released his absolutely stunning Nirvana EP in October 2013. In October of the previous year Sam collaborated with British brothers Disclosure for the melodic yet dance-y tune "Latch". His highly anticipated debut LP In A Lonely Hour is due sometime this month. Until then we will just have to keep the other tracks on replay. No harm in that..

Music Monday- The 1975

If you haven't heard of the 1975, then allow me to introduce you to your new favourite band. The Manchester four-piece mix soft, melodic vocals and emotionally charged lyrics with rock 'n' roll guitar riffs and R&B flavor. Their first four EPs - Facedown, Sex, Music For Cars, and IV - put the band on the radar. But their self-titled debut album, shot them to number one on the UK charts. They've embarked on multiple tours across the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They will be performing at Coachella in Indio, California, Sunday April 13 and 20. They also are working on new material with pop super group One Direction and Fall Out Boy. Their debut album The 1975 is available now. Check out some of their material here.
